Hello and welcome to my business card, if you scroll down this blog page and you will find links to my various creative projects. But first a brief biography of who am I and what I do. Thanks for your time.
Dave Pickering is 27 years old. He lives in East London and works part time as an Early Years Library Outreach Worker. The rest of his time is devoted to various projects involving writing, music, drama and performance.
He studied Theatre Studies and Creative Writing at Lancaster University. During that time he co-founded a theatre and radio company called The Strangely Compelling, which created performance work in the Lancashire area and at the Edinburgh Festival, receiving favourable reviews.
He also wrote for, performed in, and co-directed a monthly radio comedy show, The Trailing Edge, which was twice nominated for The National Student Radio Awards. One of his stage plays was short-listed for The National Student Playwright Competition 2000.
Since moving to London in 2005, Dave has been taking on new projects as if his life depended on it. Some of these projects have been developed into live performance at Fresh festivals. Through Fresh, Dave has performed music and theatre work in a variety of locations across the South-West.
Dave has worked full and part time as a Library Assistant in various libraries in Lancashire and London. He now works as an EYLOW, which involves running story and song sessions within the community to promote libraries, reading and books for the Under 5s and their parents.
RethinkDaily
Dave has written two series of rethinkdaily's flagship podcast drama, Numbers. This programme has had a very positive response from its listeners. It's has also impressed production company Perfectly Normal. Episode 11 of Numbers was nominated for The Internet Programme Award at The Sony Radio Academy Awards 2009.
The Trailing Edge also produced a show for Rethink’s first season.
Under the banner of literature/performance project Window, Dave co-produced two series of short story programme Sharp Things, for Rethinkdaily.
Music Projects
Dave is a talented singer-songwriter and musician. He performs solo as The Dave. He is the founder member of music collective Apples For Everyone and continues to take a lead role in the music and performance that they create. He is a member of the electronic-pop duo The Middle Class Bastards.
Apples For Everyone
Apples For Everyone are a big band that make big music. Our members span across age, influence, instrument and background. There are currently 11 of us in the band. We came together because we share a single idea: to play in a band so large and so open that it forms its own musical movement.
The Middle Class Bastards
The Middle Class Bastards are a two-man epic pop group, made up of me and my friend from back in the day Alexander Cameron. We live in different cities. We live in the same city. We live in the past. We live in the future. We meet up in the gap between. We make CD quality copies of that feeling. And we give them to you.
In Development
Dave is developing two radio plays with Perfectly Normal Productions for BBC Radio 4.
Apart from the projects mentioned above, Dave is also working on a number of musical collaborations with different performers which may develop into public performance and album release in the near future.
He has completed three novels and is currently in the process of sending them to publishers. They have been well received.
He is currently working on a series of stories aimed at the under 5s and a series of stage plays for adults as well as his forth novel.
The Trailing Edge are developing a new comedy creation which will probably be video based and released on the Internet next year.
A graphic novel script he has written, In Berlin, is currently being illustrated by Celese Kuyang Heward.
